As a compact crossover, the Hyundai Kona combines a stylish design and comfort with utility. Even while the Kona’s smaller dimensions make it less accommodating for passengers, it is still a capable and economical vehicle for a family of four. The standard engine is good enough for daily commuting but you can always go for the higher-spec turbo models if you choose to do so.

Performance & Handling

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is a subcompact SUV that is fun and engaging to drive. The base engine provides sufficient power for everyday driving and performs well overall. However, for those seeking more power and performance, Hyundai introduced the Kona N variant. Hyundai has spent a lot of time refining the transmission of the Kona, resulting in one of the best transmissions in the segment. The transmission performs smoothly and efficiently, contributing to the overall good driving experience. However, at times we did notice slight hesitancy when starting off from a stop. Although this hesitancy may be noticeable at times, it is a minor issue that should not bother the average commuter or detract from the overall driving experience.

In terms of the driving experience, the Kona is fun to drive. Despite the lack of steering feedback from the road, It offers a responsive and nimble driving feel, making it enjoyable on both city streets and winding roads.

Technology & Connectivity

In the 2022 Hyundai Kona, the infotainment system receives an upgrade with an 8.0-inch touchscreen. This screen size provides a clear and easily readable display, enhancing the overall user experience. One thing we really appreciate is the inclusion of physical knobs for volume control and radio station tuning. This allows for quick adjustments without solely relying on touch inputs, which at times can be distracting while driving. The presence of physical knobs is appreciated by many drivers who prefer tactile feedback and find them more intuitive to use.

The infotainment system itself is designed to be user-friendly and responsive. The menu layout is well-organized, making it easy to navigate through various features and settings. Whether it’s accessing audio controls, adjusting vehicle settings, or exploring different entertainment options, the system provides a straightforward and intuitive interface.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and for added convenience, you can get wireless charging on the higher trims.

Interior & Comfort

Despite the abundance of plastic inside the Kona, it manages to provide a remarkably comfortable environment. The infotainment system is great thanks to well-organized buttons and an easy-to-navigate menu layout. One notable aspect of the Kona’s interior is its above-average rear headroom. This allows passengers to sit comfortably without feeling cramped or restricted. However, while the headroom is generous, the rear legroom may pose a challenge, especially for taller drivers.

On the road, the 2022 Hyundai Kona does a good job of providing a comfortable ride. However, road and wind noise are prevelant at highway speeds, which is a common issue in this class. Overall, the Kona provides a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

Cargo Space & Storage

When it comes to cargo space, the 2022 Hyundai Kona proves to be a competitive option within its segment. One standout feature is the trunk’s low liftover height, which adds to the convenience of loading and unloading items. This feature makes it easier to access the cargo area, especially when dealing with heavier or bulkier items. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend trip or running daily errands, the Kona’s cargo space provides ample room for your belongings.

While the Kona impresses with its cargo space, the storage options within the cabin itself are relatively smaller in size. The front console, glovebox, and smartphone tray offer decent storage solutions but are not as spacious as some other vehicles in the same class. Despite their smaller size, they serve their purpose.

Fuel Economy

The EPA estimates that the Kona gets a combined fuel economy of 7.4L/100km. In our test, we averaged 7.7L/100km in city and highway driving.
