Overview

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG E63 S represents the climax of AMG’s V-8 era, as they shift towards hybrid powertrains. With its 603 hp twin-turbo V8 engine, this sedan stands as one of the most formidable offerings in today’s automotive landscape. It does this while offering a plush cabin and adjustable air suspension for a comfortable ride. This year marks the E63 S’s farewell, leaving behind an unmatched legacy of excellence.

The AMG E63 S is nothing short of a speed demon. This car comes with two personalities, and despite its luxury vibe, this car is a beast. In its Comfort mode, this vehicle operates with grace and refinement, in harmony with the nine-speed automatic transmission. However, when you change to any of the sports modes, it transforms into a ferocious beast, delivering crazy power available with little throttle inputs. Under the hood, there’s a hand-built 4L twin-turbo V8 engine that churns out a whopping 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. This powerful engine is paired with a super-quick nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. The transmission is smooth and the gear shifts happen really quickly, while the V-8’s 627 pound-feet of torque keeps the tires spinning. Accelerating from a standstill to 100km/h takes about 3.4 seconds. But tests have shown that it’s even quicker, with Car and Driver reporting an incredible 2.8 seconds. Going below three seconds is usually something only drag racers can do, and in terms of acceleration, this puts the AMG E63 S in the same league as sports cars like the Corvette Stingray Z51.

But it’s not just about going fast in a straight line. I got to experience it on some winding roads and it doesn’t disappoint at all. In S+ mode, the suspension is stiff, which means you can feel every little irregularity on the road. Additionally, the steering is well-balanced and highly responsive, and it doesn’t feel numb like some other fast cars. When you take a turn, the all-wheel-drive system holds onto the road nicely.

The best thing about this car is the exhaust. Despite being equipped with twin turbochargers, the 4L V-8 creates an exhaust note nearly as delightful as AMG’s naturally aspirated V-8 engines of the past. And in Sport+ mode, the sound intensifies and it roars like a wild animal. When you take your foot off the gas after a quick acceleration, you’re treated to a symphony of snaps, crackles, and pops that sound more like a Formula 1 car from the 1970s than a modern luxury sedan. It’s absolutely amazing and we loved every second. While AMG is making faster cars, it’s sad to think that cars like this won’t sound the same in the future.

The E-Class interior offers a truly exceptional experience for every passenger. Everything in the cabin fits together well, creating a nice atmosphere. You can easily control the MBUX infotainment system using a touchpad in the center console, and it’s simple to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is standard across all models, enhancing connectivity options. Just like other E-Class models, the interior uses high-quality materials and is put together with great care, like a handbag made by a luxury brand. The dashboard is clean and simple, with a row of aluminum buttons for the air conditioning system. Additionally, the robust three-spoke steering wheel, complete with a flat bottom and sizeable paddle shifters, adds to the sporty character and feels like something that belongs in this car.

Seating in the E63 S is great, delivering both extensive customization and substantial support, accompanied by plush cushioning. While the front seats provide generous head and legroom, the rear accommodations fall slightly short in comparison to competitors within the same class. The ride quality isn’t as luxurious and comfortable as the regular E-Class but gets the job done in the default setting. Road and wind noise is virtually nonexistent at highway speeds, allowing for a quiet cabin.

The E-Class interior comes with a modern and tech-savvy design, featuring a striking pair of expansive 12.3-inch screens that take center stage on the upper dashboard. One screen serves as a digital gauge cluster, while the other functions as the infotainment hub. Mercedes-Benz continues its familiar design with a console-mounted control knob, augmented by a touchpad on top, offering an additional method for users to input commands. However, the touchpad did raise some concerns during our test and was a bit finicky at times. For added convenience, the driver also has the option to interact with these two screens using a set of touch-sensitive controls located on the steering wheel. This enhances accessibility, allowing drivers to stay focused on the road while managing various functions.

The E63 S offers an impressive array of safety features to keep you secure on the road. Some of these include Active Steering Assist, which helps with steering, Active Lane Change Assist to assist with lane changes, Active Emergency Stop Assist for emergency situations, Active Speed Limit Assist to help you stay within speed limits, and Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function to enhance braking in cross-traffic scenarios.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, integration comes standard across the lineup ensuring you can easily connect your smartphone for a more integrated driving experience. Additionally, wireless phone charging is also available to keep your devices powered, eliminating the hassle of tangled cords and ensuring your devices remain at full battery capacity throughout your journey. All of these features combine to create a high-tech and user-friendly cabin that makes this insanely sporty sedan more comfortable for daily driving.

When it comes to cargo space, the E63 S falls on the lower end in this segment. However, that’s not to say it’s lacking in roominess. The trunk is notably spacious, with ample depth and height, making it practical for accommodating a variety of items. What adds to its versatility are the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats, which provide flexibility for different cargo and passenger configurations.

Up front, the E-Class shines in its capacity for storing small items that are often needed during your journeys. Whether it’s your phone, wallet, or other essentials, the E-Class comes well-equipped to keep things organized. The storage space in the front is better than many premium vehicles thanks to its generous center console, convenient door pockets, and a roomy glovebox. This ensures that you can keep your essentials within easy reach and neatly stowed away.

When it comes to accommodating child car seats, the E63 S does a good job. Most standard-sized car seats should fit comfortably in the back without significant hassle. However, if you have larger or bulkier car seats, you may find it a bit tight, so some adjustments might be necessary to ensure a secure fit.

The E63 S is rated at 14.8 L/100 km in the city and 9.9 L/100 km on the highway. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance to drive it for a long enough time to see how it performs in terms of fuel efficiency. Our experience with the car was quite short, mainly spent while it was parked. We’re hoping that Mercedes-Benz corporate loans us this vehicle for an extended period,  allowing us to conduct a comprehensive and thorough evaluation of its fuel efficiency under varied driving conditions.
