Automotive Reviews
The RDX is equipped with a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. While the RDX may not be classified as a performance SUV, it performs well within its segment thanks to a quick 0-100km/h time of 6.4 seconds. The throttle is responsive to inputs, and there is ample power at lower speeds. In most cases, the 10-speed automatic transmission does an excellent job of being in the right gear. However, we did encounter some issues with downshifting or upshifting during stop-and-go traffic, resulting in occasional jerking or lurching.
Nevertheless, thanks to the turbocharged engine and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, the RDX remains far from a dull SUV. It delivers an enjoyable driving experience, particularly when cornering.
The RDX really shines when it comes to tech. All models are equipped with Acura’s driver-assist technology, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition. While all these systems generally work well, we did notice that the adaptive cruise control was somewhat abrupt at times, with sudden braking and acceleration.
The 10.2-inch touchpad-based infotainment system comes on all RDX models. Even though it’s visually appealing, it remains the most controversial aspect of the RDX. Many reviewers don’t like it due to the learning curve associated with it. However, we adapted to it quite quickly and if you are a tech-savvy buyer, you should be able to use the system with ease. Nevertheless, even if you’re not particularly tech-savvy, it’s still worth giving it a try.
A wireless charging pad is conveniently located in the second row of the center console, underneath the infotainment touchpad. We like the positioning of this charging pad over those in certain other vehicles, mainly because it ensures the phone remains beyond both the reach and the direct line of sight of the driver. In addition to the wireless charging pad, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all RDX models. This is great and keeps the cabin clean since you don’t need a tangle of wires cluttering your cabin.
One of our favourite features of the RDX was the ELS studio 3D premium audio system, which delivers exceptional sound quality and makes the daily commute more fun. If you love your music, then you should definitely check this audio system out.
The interior of the RDX is a great place to spend time in, thanks to a well-designed and upscale cabin. The front seats are comfortable for long trips and look great in the optional red colour that comes with black suede inserts. In the Platinum Elite A-Spec, which we tested, the driver’s and front passenger’s seats are equipped with a 16-way power adjustment, which includes lumbar support, thigh extension, and side bolstering. There is a good amount of space for the front and rear passengers. However, some competitors from other brands do offer more cabin space in this segment. We also liked the interior accent lighting in the RDX. It lights up 10 areas in the RDX and makes the cabin look great at night. Additionally, there is a wide selection of colours available for customization, which means everyone can find a colour they like.
When it comes to comfort, the suspension system of the RDX excels in ensuring a smooth ride regardless of the road surface. While there is minimal road and wind noise at higher speeds, it’s worth noting that certain luxury SUVs from other brands in this segment are a bit quieter.
The RDX offers a generous amount of storage space, better than other competitors in its segment. With the rear seats up, the maximum cargo volume is 881 L. If you require even more space, folding down the rear seats allows for a maximum volume of 2260 L.
In terms of cabin storage, the RDX excels with its well-designed center console featuring two rows, providing ample space. Additionally, the rear seats offer plenty of room for car seats, and the car seat anchors are clearly marked.
The RDX is rated at 10.3 L/100km combined (11.3 City/ 9.1 Highway). We averaged 11.1 in our testing which included both city and highway driving.
